The ferry from Civitavecchia to Palermo was large, comfortable and relaxing and long before our arrival, the 'mountains' (Monte Pellegrino) surrounding Palermo come into view.

As we docked our big red coach and (excellent) guide Tania were awaiting us on the quayside. Time for a big buffet breakfast at the Excelsior Hotel before our visit to Monreale, up on the hill above Palermo. For me this was the highlight (and Sicily is all highlights!) of our visit. On the way we had our first experience of the chaotic streets and traffic of Palermo. The Norman Cathedral and cloisters with exquisite and intricate Arab mosaics are a quite unforgettable experience.

Palermo is a 'real' Sicilian city, busy, chaotic and with lots of character and great contrasts - everything from decrepit dark narrow streets to sophisticated modern shops and restaurants.
